Optimizing for Google

All of us know that Google is one of the best converting traffic sources. Most of us have a fairly good idea of how to attract some of its traffic to our sites. Yet only a few of us actually have the ability to attract it in the volume needed to earn a living. Why? Well primarily because the majority of all tutorials, that I've read, suggest you employ the same common techniques. The inevitable consequence of this is countless webmasters working to accomplish the same goal in the same way. My goal here is to help you break this cycle.

Page Design

First and foremost it's important to have a page design that facilitates the crawling of googlebot, Google's web crawler. By this I mean a page that offers googlebot what it's hungry for, such as keyword rich text in header and bold tags, several high quality in and outbound links to relevant content and of course the absence of anything spam is always appreciated.

Keyword Phrases

Rather than simply choosing a keyword, or several keywords, it's more beneficial to simply choose a 2-3 word keyword phrase. This targets your surfers a little more and also thins out the competition you may otherwise be faced with. For example, rather than choosing a highly competitive keyword such as 'pussy' you could get much higher listings and therefore more traffic with something slightly less competitive such as 'shaven teen pussy', or 'older mature pussy'. Any keyword phrase will do, just keep in mind that the more competitive the keyword the less traffic you're likely to receive. If you do your research and choose a phrase that fewer webmasters use themselves, you're likely to get much more traffic at the end of the day.

So how do you research the popularity of keyword phrases? Easy, just pull up Google and start searching! It also helps to have the Google Toolbar installed so that you can see the PR (PageRank) of the sites you find on the search results pages. There's two things I look for when determining the popularity of a chosen phrase: the number of returned listings, and the volume of AdWords boxes on the page. If your phrase is 'Free Porn' for example it will return more than 3 million sites and 8+ AdWords boxes - you can bet the odds are against you. If you choose a more specific phrase such as 'free granny porn' it only returns around 250 thousand sites, giving your site a much better shot at a higher listing.

Keyword Density

I don't believe Google places enormous weight on keyword density, but it's still very good practice to aim for a density of anywhere between 5% and 15%. There are plenty of scripts online to check the keyword density of your pages.

The Almighty Google Page Rank

Page Rank is Google's method of measuring the link popularity of any given site. Page Rank is measured on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being lowest and 10 being next to impossible. If you want to see the Page Rank of your, and other, sites simply download the Google Toolbar. Once you have the toolbar installed check out Silvercash Unleashed, you'll see a green bar representing a Page Rank of 5. Hold your curser over the bar to see the actual Rank number. Page Rank is a much more difficult system to manipulate, when compared to general link popularity, because it not only checks how many sites link to you, but their own Page Rank as well. This means that no longer will simply having thousands of different sites linking to you be enough. For a good Page Rank you need other sites with good Page Rank to link to you. This is Google's way of ensuring only sites that are truly relevant and popular get high listings in their search results.

Will Page Rank alone guarantee a high listing? Nope but it will certainly help.

How do you get, or increase, Page Rank? Well there's two ways really, the hard & fast way or the slow but common way.

  1. Hard & Fast Way:

  2. Slow but Common Way

Increasing Current Page Rank

There are reports I've read that state it may be possible to increase the Page Rank you already have simply by linking together your pages in a way that takes advantage of the way Page Rank is calculated.

Do this by choosing one page on your site that you will focus your efforts on. Link this page to & from your homepage, to & from all of your content pages and to & from a links page, if you have one. Avoid linking all pages together, such as with a complete nav bar on every page, as this may actually decrease your current rank. This is because Page Rank is assigned to a page according the rank of the page linking to it. Also, the rank of a page diminishes according to how many pages it itself links to. So with this in mind, linking each individual page simply to & from one another helps to preserve the overall rank. This may also help you to understand why big sites prefer the majority of links to other sites to be on a separate links page. If they've accomplished a high rank on their main page, and from it link to hundreds of smaller sites, then the rank on their main page would fall.

Aside from linking the pages within your site together in this fashion, you can also try to target which page you would like other high ranking sites to link to. Since rank is assigned to a page according to the rank of the page linking to you then it would make sense to have a high ranking site link to a page on your site with very few outbound links, this way you can preserve any rank they give you. The best way to do this is to make a page with only one link to the page you're focusing your efforts on, and have a high ranking page link to this page. By doing this you essentially send half the rank they give you directly to the page you want it on. If you have ten out links, for example, on a page linked to from a high PR site, then only one tenth of the rank would be transferred to the page you want it transferred to.

Google hasn't released any official information regarding how it truly calculates and disperses Page Rank, meaning this theory of increasing rank is just that, a theory. However it was formulated by known search engine technicians who believe it to work, I've also seen increased rank on my sites since employing these linking methods.

Wrapping it up...

So now that you know some proven techniques for making our friend Google happy, go out and spend some time optimizing your sites for the next crawl which usually takes place around the end of each month. And if you remember anything from this guide remember these key points: Don't spam, design your pages with Google in mind, choose less competitive keyword phrases, pay attention to your Page Rank and work to attain as many link trades from popular sites within your niche as possible.

And when in doubt simply ponder this: WWGD (What Would Google Do)?
